Amy E. McLaren was born and raised in the Roanoke Valley. After graduating from Salem High School, she received her Bachelor of Arts from James Madison University while an active member of Alpha Phi and dancing as a soloist for the Rockingham Ballet Theatre. In South Carolina, she studied southern American history, specifically Charleston in the Civil War and higher education in the South during the 1920s, and graduated cum laude with her Master of Arts degree from the College of Charleston as well as presented her research at the Brian Bertoti Conference, held at Virginia Tech. She worked as an editor for a local and regional history publication company after graduate school.

As a law student, Amy was selected as a member of the Honor Council and as an Executive Editor of Resolved: Journal of Alternative Dispute Resolution. Amy worked as a research fellow and had the opportunity to present draft legislation regarding healthcare and financial regulation in Washington, D.C. during her fellowship. She received the CALI Award for Excellence in Insurance Law and upon graduation, received the Outstanding Public Service Award for her pro bono work with the Charleston County Public Defenders’ Office and Charleston County Guardian ad Litem program. After graduating from Charleston School of Law, Amy practiced at a fast-paced, plaintiff personal injury and workers’ compensation law firm in South Carolina.

Having returned to the Roanoke Valley, Amy intends to provide legal services and give back to the community that provided her with so many opportunities in her youth. In her free time, Amy is active in the arts community and, having grown up with a dad who coached football, can’t wait for football season every year!
